Meeting with Katie Couric July 2010
WITHOUT CONSENT has just been released in the UK, Canada and South Africa.
The Times said, 'Fox amply confirms the promise of her first book, MALICIOUS INTENT.'
Readers are full of praise, here are some examples from the Waterstones bookstore website:
Dr
Anya Crichton is a forensic pathologist, who has recently left the
public sector and has begun working privately. As well as working hard
to maintain her relationship with her son and ex-husband, she must act
as one of the first points of contact for vulnerable woman, due to her
employment at a Sexual Assault Unit. In addition to this, as a favour
she is asked to investigate some of the cases of a former colleague, a
well-respected man who is now suspected of unethical practise, harmful
to the victims in his cases. Reluctant to be a whistle-blower, she
however chooses to accept the task, which leads her into a mystery that
links current cases under investigation to crimes that were thought to
be have been solved twenty years previously. The doctor's journey is
detailed in this sensational book, as the investigation draws she and
her friends, family and workmates into a dangerous case that may change
their lives forever.
A must-read for fans of Patricia
Cornwell, Tess Gerritsen, Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and the like,
this is a gripping page-turner, with unexpected twists and turns
throughout the book. If you are a fan of detailed stories, with
well-developed characters that you actually care about, then you should
definitely give this a try. Kathryn Fox has an eye for detail and
description that is not easily paralleled, and keeps her story moving
along swiftly, without any slowing of the pace of the story. Fans of
this author will have already have met many of the main characters in
her debut novel Malicious Intent, and would be right to be eagerly
awaiting this sequel.
Dr
Anya Crichton is an Australian pathologist and forensic physician who
last year became a victim of a damaging newspaper report casting doubt
upon her credibility. Determined to continue her valuable work at a
rape centre she finds herself treating two women who exhibit similar
wounds and who the rapist both told ‘if you can’t be hurt, you can’t be
loved’. In another part of Sydney Geoffrey Willard has been
released after serving 20 years for murdering a young woman whose
injuries bear a resemblance to Anya’s patients. Her career having
already suffered setbacks, Anya is now asked to review some of the
cases from one of her colleagues, Alf Carney, who seems to have made
some significant errors and Anya now learns he missed a vital clue when
examining the body of the girl Willard was convicted of killing. Although
a forensic physician, Anya finds herself torn between the need for
science against the need of the individual. She strongly believes that
her role is as an advocate and finds herself battling against detailed
photographic examinations which she knows will further the conviction
rates but at whose expense? Then one of her rape victims turns up dead
and Geoff Willard is in the frame. She finds herself inadvertently
helping a ruthless barrister, Veronica Slater, who seems intent on
finding evidence to free rapists and murderers while at the same time
furthering her own ego and career. Helped by DI Hayden Richards Anya
starts some sleuthing of her own but in so doing uncovers a web of
deceit going back 20 years. As a general practitioner Kathryn Fox
has more than enough inside knowledge to enrich the text with just
enough medical terminology to ensure the characters ooze authenticity
and hooks the reader with a narrative filled with dramatic action.
A
Brilliantly written and gripping read from start to finish is the best
way to describe this crime fiction book. As Kathryn Fox's forensic
pathologist Dr Anya Crichton shows a down to earth, strong character,
whose meticulous in collecting forensic evidence whilst at the same
time showing an understanding of how the victims of rape have been
affected and made to feel by their attacker. The working relationships
Dr Crichton has with colleagues from the police and forensic teams help
to make her a very likeable character with similar qualities to Kay
Scarpetta in Patricia Cornwells' ccrime novels. Her strength of
character also comes over when having to investigate and review a
colleagues work and then in the way she handles her own escape from
danger.
The story line flows with ease whilst getting deeper
into the forensic detail of the case to find what links the victims to
the crime, slong with Anya's personal life which helps to give a
convincing plot to the whole book.
Thisis a well written fast
pace thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat guessing and
turning the pages to find yet another twist to the crime. The
characters are so well developed and the detail shown in the forensic
investigation just has you impatiently awaiting the next book. For more reviews, go to www.waterstones.com
