It’s been a busy couple of months.
For the US release of SKIN AND BONE, I travelled to Martha's Vineyard and then New York, just in time for Thrillerfest. In terms of writers’ conferences, the annual event by the International Thriller Writers is right up there with the world’s best.
The camaraderie and kindness shown by established thriller writers to aspiring or up and coming authors never ceases to amaze. This really is one of the few professions in which someone can be successful and have others genuinely happy for them. On that note, congratulations to Sean Chercover on all his success, awards and nominations for Big City Bad Blood!
Medicine and journalism are traditionally very competitive and aren’t renowned for great support from colleagues. That makes being a thriller author so much more rewarding. Most of us were taught by our parents never to judge a book by its cover. It's what's inside that counts and appearances can be deceptive. That is absolutely true for people, buildings and places, but couldn't be further from the truth for books.
You have to judge a book by its cover. Why? Because the cover, along with the title, have to tell you within a quick glance what sort of book it is. If the story is a thriller, the cover should be completely different from that of a romance, travel book or children's story.
The cover has to convey specific information and entice the reader or it hasn't done its job. In other words, summarize a 100,000 word novel in one picture or less. Make it intriguing, compelling but not ambiguous. Even more than that, make the cover so enticing that no reader can go past it, no matter where it sits in the bookshop. It has to stand out from the others. Unless, of course, the cover is meant to be a copycat and mimic work by another ...

A few months ago, I heard about the Australian Government's plans to have a summit this month aimed at shaping the country's future to the year 2020. One of the ten topics to be discusssed by panels drawn from the Australian people was impressively titled: "Towards a creative Australia: the future of the arts, film and design."
With the talented and eloquent Cate Blanchett chairing this section, the future was looking pretty bright. This was a government with a unique vision. One that appreciates the importance of creativity to our futures. After all, what good is a scientist, engineer or even doctor who lacks creativity? It takes imagination, vision and originality to solve problems and embrace new ideas. Yes, the creative arts were finally being acknowledged. Books and authors would now surely receive the recognition and respect they deserve.
Or so I thought.
An article that appeared in early March in The Age newspaper put the 20 ...
